AirPods firmware version 6 released with iOS 17 compatibility, improved switching and AirPods Pro 2-specific peculiarities.
Apple didn't wait until iOS 17 was released before updating its AirPods line with the latest firmware. Version 6.0 has been released, which contains updates for almost every AirPods model.
The largest set of features is reserved for AirPods Pro 2, whose build number is 6A301. This includes Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness features in combination with a product running iOS 17.
AirPods Pro, AirPods 2, AirPods 3 and AirPods Max are given build number 6A300. This version includes a button press to mute or unmute calls, as well as improvements to automatic switching.
New firmware is installed automatically for users, and there is no mechanism to force a manual update. The firmware will install itself as long as your AirPods or AirPods Pro are in the charging case and connected to your iOS device.
Firmware 6.0 Release Notes:
When used with iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, the AirPods 6A300/6A301 firmware update takes AirPods Pro (2nd generation) capabilities to the next level with Adaptive audio, conversation tracking and personalized volume. This update also adds convenience and control over calls with tap to mute and unmute for AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation), and AirPods Max, as well as significant improvements to the auto-switch feature for all available AirPods on Apple devices with the latest software updates.
