Google today announced the rollout of Matter support for the 2020 Nest Thermostat. In particular, this means that the smart thermostat can now be controlled using the Apple Home app and Siri on iPhone and other devices.
Google's blog post says that Matter support will roll out to the Nest thermostat with automatic over-the-air software updates starting today and the rollout will be completed over the next few weeks. Matter is a universal smart home standard that supports Apple's HomeKit, Google's Home, Amazon's Alexa, Samsung's SmartThings, and other smart home platforms all in one. This means Nest finally supports HomeKit.
In the Home app, users can adjust the Nest Thermostat temperature, change the thermostat mode, and more, according to Google. The Verge notes that iPhone users will need to update to iOS 16.4 or later to take advantage of this feature.
Google is “looking into” adding Matter support to older Nest thermostats, according to The Verge. but for now they remain incompatible with HomeKit.
