Kuo: iPhone 15 will include an upgraded ultra-wideband chip for Vision Pro deep integration

Apple officially announced its new Vision Pro platform at WWDC this month, with a release date of early 2024. ” Now, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new report detailing Apple's plans to better integrate the iPhone with the Vision Pro ecosystem, starting with the iPhone 15 later this year.

iPhone 15 with improved UWB features

In a new tweet, Kuo reveals that Apple will be “aggressively updating hardware specifications”; iPhone as part of its efforts to build a competitive ecosystem around the Vision Pro. “The ecosystem is one of the key success factors for the Vision Pro, including integration with other Apple hardware products, and the core hardware features are Wi-Fi and UWB.” Kuo explains.

The first step in this process will reportedly be updating the ultra-wideband chip inside the iPhone 15. According to Kuo, the iPhone 15 will likely use a new version of the ultra-wideband chip that Apple is currently labeling like U1 chip to be more efficient and reliable.

“iPhone 15 will likely update the UWB specification and move the manufacturing process from 16nm to the more advanced 7nm, allowing for better performance or lower power consumption for nearby interactions.” Kuo says.

The Apple U1 chip first debuted in the iPhone 11 and has been included in every iPhone model since then. The U1 chip is also featured in the Apple AirTag item tracker, Apple Watch Series 6 and later, HomePod mini, second-generation full-size HomePod, and the latest-generation AirPods Pro charging case.

Apple uses the U1 chip for a variety of purposes, including Find Me, Handoff, Precision Finding, AirDrop, and more. Kuo believes the upgraded version of the U1 chip will improve the performance of these features, as well as play a key role in the integration between the Vision Pro and other Apple products.

iPhone 16 with Wi-Fi 7

Looking to the future, Kuo says the iPhone 16 should be Apple's first iPhone with Wi-Fi 7. Fi 7, which will facilitate the integration of Apple hardware products running on the same local area network and provide a better experience with the ecosystem.” the analyst explains.

Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation standard for Wi-Fi technology and promises significant increases in transmission speeds and data throughput. In fact, the Wi-Fi Alliance has specifically pointed out the benefits that Wi-Fi 7 will offer for virtual and augmented reality technologies.

Even more exciting is the next generation of AR and VR content that is in the user store. WiFi 7 opens up a world of possibilities to explore new virtual worlds with fully interactive content. With ultra-fast speeds and imperceptible latency levels, users can immerse themselves in these worlds with realistic responsiveness and new sensor technologies that elevate the experience beyond our wildest imagination.

Apple doesn’ t has yet to provide specific details on what hardware is inside the Vision Pro headset. However, it's clear that the Vision Pro will use some of these next-generation technologies, and Apple hopes they'll be tightly integrated with the iPhone and other devices in the future.
