Just install iOS 17? Here are 12 things to do first

Apple released iOS 17 to the public today, and there are hundreds of new features and changes for you to learn about. Some of these options require some configuration to get up and running, so we've written this guide to walk you through what you should do once you've installed ‌iOS 17‌.

Setting the standby screen

When you charge a running iPhone ‌iOS 17‌ in vertical and horizontal position, a new standby screen is displayed. StandBy mode serves as a home hub for displaying visual information that makes your ‌iPhone‌ is more useful when it's not in active use.

Standby mode is most useful on iPhone 14 Pro models with an always-on display, but it's available on all iPhones running ‌iOS 17‌ .

There are three standby screens in total, which you can access by swiping between them when the phone is in the corresponding standby position. The first screen displays widgets (including interactive ones), the second displays photos from the Photos library, and the third displays a large clock showing the time.

You will need to configure two of them. widgets are arranged on the widget screen to make it more useful, and you can also customize the display of the time and photos you see. Setup is done by switching to the desired screen and long-pressing it to access the setup options.

StandBy can display incoming notifications, interactions, and Siri requests in full screen. When you use Standby mode with different MagSafe chargers in different locations, you can set your phone to remember which screen configuration you prefer based on location. For example, you may prefer widgets when you're in the office, or a clock screen when your ‌iPhone‌ on your nightstand.

Prioritize interactive widgets

Lock screen and Home screen widgets are interactive in ‌iOS 17‌, making the widgets much more useful. You can do things like mark a reminder or activate a home device directly from the widget without opening the app.

Both Apple and third-party apps can use the new widget. interactive features, so you may want to re-customize widgets now that some widgets have become more useful.

Lock screen widgets can be customized by long-pressing the lock screen, selecting the Lock screen option, and then pressing “Tune”. From here, select your lock screen, and then tap the widgets field to select widget options.

On the ‌Home screen‌ Press and hold the “+” button in the top left corner and select the widget you want to add.

Customize your contact poster

In ‌iOS 17‌ There's a customizable contact poster that people see when you call them, use FaceTime, or text them. You can customize it with a photo, Memoji, Animoji, or initial, and choose the colors and fonts you prefer.

When you install ‌iOS 17‌ You'll be prompted to create a contact poster, but you can customize it at any time in the Contacts app. Simply open Contacts, tap My Card, and then tap Edit in the top right corner to get to the editing interface.

From there, you can select a photo, choose a color for text, add a filter, and much more. You can have multiple contact posters to switch between, or you can create a contact photo different from your contact poster.

The contact poster and contact photo you select will be visible to other people when you call or message them, but there are some settings you can use to restrict access. You can automatically share your photo and poster with all your contacts or send your ‌iPhone‌ get your permission first. Name and photo sharing can also be turned off completely if desired.

Make sure that live voicemail is turned on (US and Canada only)

Live Voicemail is a new feature that allows you to see a transcript of the voicemail as it was left so you can respond if it's an important call. You can make sure Live Voicemail is turned on by opening the Settings app, tapping Phone, scrolling down to Live Voicemail, and turning it on.

If this option is enabled, when someone starts leaving a voicemail, you'll see a transcript of what they're saying right on your lock screen. You can ignore it or answer the call. During beta testing, Live Voicemail's wording was a little confusing to callers, but Apple has since addressed the issue.

If you're annoyed by Live Voicemail, turning it off will turn it off and your voicemail will return to normal. .

Create your own stickers

Apple added the Remove Object from Background Tool in iOS 16, which lets you remove the main object from any image. In ‌iOS 17‌, using this feature, you can turn an image object into a sticker.

For this to work, select any photo with the main subject. Short press and hold the image theme, and in the pop-up text window, select “Add sticker.”

From there, you can choose a sticker effect such as giving a plump look, including a white border, adding a glitter effect, and more. Some stickers animate when extracted from a Live Photo, and the stickers you create can be used throughout the operating system.

In ‌iOS 17‌ Apple has also combined emoji and stickers into one, so stickers work everywhere you can use emoji.

Set up new Safari profiles

In ‌‌iOS 17‌‌ Apple added a profile feature that allows you to separate page views for different use cases. For example, you can create a “Work” and a “Personal” profile to keep all your work browsing separate from your personal browsing.

Each profile has separate cookies. , browsing history, extensions and website data. For example, you can disable cookies and pop-ups in one profile while leaving them enabled for another profile. Profiles also have separate favorites and tab groups.

To set up individual profiles, open the Settings app, select Safari, tap New Profile, and choose an icon, name, and background color. .

Enable tracking protection

URLs in ‌‌iOS 17‌‌ may be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL, to prevent websites from tracking your browsing using URL identifiers. This feature is automatically turned on for private browsing in ‌‌iOS 17‌‌, but you can turn it on for all browsing.

To turn it on, open the Settings app and go to Settings . Safari. Tap Advanced, then tap Advanced Tracking and Fingerprint Protection. From there, turn on “All Views.” This setting ensures that URLs opened in Safari will remove any tracking information at the end of the URL.

Share your iCloud Keychain passwords

‌iOS 17‌ Lets you securely share passwords and access keys stored in iCloud Keychain with friends and family. With the sharing feature, passwords for media accounts, utilities, bills, and more can be shared among multiple people.

Passwords can be shared by going to the Passwords section in the Settings app. and clicking “Get Started” under the “Share Passwords with Family” banner. Alternatively, you can click the “+” button and create a new shared group. You can create several separate groups to share passwords with different people.

Name your pets in photos

In the ‌Photos‌ section The People app is now called Pets & People because ‌iPhone‌ can recognize dogs and cats. Once you allow your ‌iPhone‌ pay a little, go to the Pets & People album, and you can identify your pets and other animals you have photos of, adding names just like you can with people.

You can view additional photos to add more, view slideshows, and more.

Record your mood

Apple has added mood tracking to the app Health in ‌iOS 17‌ so you can track your mental wellbeing over time. To get to it, open the Health app, go to Overview and tap Mental Wellbeing. Select “Journal” in the “State of Mind” section and you can choose your mood.

You can set your mood for the current time or your overall mood for the day, selecting factors that may have influenced your mood, such as work or relationships. You can see how your mood changes from week to week and what affects how you feel.

You can set notifications to remind you to log your mood, and if you have an Apple Watch, you can log your mood from your wrist.

Share AirTag

AirTags can be shared with family members, so if your partner or your child borrows an item with an AirTag, they will no longer receive alerts about an unknown item traveling with them. This also applies to items that have Find My integration.

To share your device, open ‌Find‌ application and select an element tag. Select an AirTag or item and click Share this AirTag. From here, you can select the contact you want to share the AirTag with.
