A new rumor claims Apple's 2023 iPhone will have a titanium case with curved rear edges, replacing the existing rectangular design.
According to Twitter user @ShrimpApplePro, the back edges of the iPhone 15 will be rounded. to create a new border similar to the bottom edges of the latest 14-inch and 16-inch Apple MacBook Pros. For reference, the iPhone 14 models have a flat, square-edged design that harkens back to the iPhone 4. The latest model with curved edges was the iPhone 11.
Despite the switch to titanium material, the iPhone 15 will “still have a back glass,” claims an insider who has provided accurate information in the past, although @ShrimpApplePro warns that the information is “still too early to take it for what it is.”
This isn't the first time we've heard rumors that Apple will release a titanium iPhone. Earlier this year iPhone 14 rumors suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max was supposed to have a titanium alloy case, but this did not happen: all iPhone 14 models have aluminum and stainless steel chassis.
However, Apple has recently explored the use of titanium cases for its products, including patents related to the use of machined titanium with unique properties for future MacBooks, iPads and iPhones.
Compared With stainless steel, titanium has a relatively high hardness, which makes it more resistant to scratches, and its rigidity makes it strong enough to withstand bending.
However, the strength of titanium also makes it difficult to pickle, so Apple developed sandblasting, pickling and chemical treatment, which makes it possible to give titanium cases a glossy surface, giving it a more attractive appearance. Apple is also investigating the use of thin oxide coatings that can reduce the appearance of oily fingerprints.
If recent reports are correct, Apple is using titanium for the first time in the iPhone and iPad. The company has used titanium as a case material in recent Apple Watch models such as the Apple Watch Ultra, and the physical Apple Card is made of titanium, but the latest iPhones and iPads are made of stainless steel and aluminum.
Probably in September 2023 iPhone 15 Models are expected to be the same size as iPhone 14 lineup and feature USB-C instead of Lightning, solid-state volume and power buttons, new camera technology and Dynamic Island for all models.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple could potentially replace the Pro Max. ” version of the iPhone 15 with a new “Ultra” model, following the Apple Watch Ultra naming convention to refer to a top-tier product. Whether the rumor of a titanium case refers to a specific iPhone 15 model, however, is unknown.
