iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: what to buy for the holiday season?

iPhone 14 is the most affordable of all the latest generation iPhones from Apple. However, the company continues to sell last year's iPhone 13. iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 14 Display

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 feature 6.1-inch displays, which Apple calls Super Retina XDR displays. The specifications of all devices are identical, including the same brightness, resolution and colors:

Design

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 share the same design we first saw on the iPhone 12 in 2020 year. This includes flat aluminum edges, an edge-to-edge display on the front with Face ID, and a glossy finish on the back in your choice of color.

While the iPhone 14 Pro features a new Dynamic Island design to house the Face ID and front camera components, the iPhone 14 uses the same notch design as the iPhone 13. The performance of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 is close to identical, but there are several ways which the iPhone 14 has an advantage. Both feature the A15 Bionic chip inside, but the version of the chip inside the iPhone 14 has an extra GPU core.

  • This difference is unlikely whether it will significantly affect everyday productivity in the real world. Perhaps more notably, the iPhone 14 has 6GB of RAM, compared to the 4GB of RAM on the iPhone 13. This could help extend the lifespan when it comes to new features added to future versions of iOS.

    Connectivity

    If you need 5G connectivity, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 will help you. Apple says this provides “super-fast downloads and high-quality streaming.” This includes support for mmWave 5G connectivity in the US, as well as 5G sub-6GHz in the US and other countries.

    Crash detection and emergency SOS

    Apple continues to expand its set of features to help you in emergencies. These are features you hope you never have to use, but it's nice to have them just in case. Exclusively for iPhone 14, the following two features are available:

    • crash detection, which can recognize when you are in a car accident and call emergency services 
    • satellite communications for  access emergency services when you're not connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network

    Rear-cameras

    The iPhone 14 offers several improvements over the iPhone 13 in terms of rear camera technology. There are two more lenses, the main camera and the ultra wide-angle camera. One of the changes is the addition of what Apple calls a “Photonic Engine”.

    Apple describes this as a new computational photography feature that offers “a giant leap in medium- and low-light photo performance across all cameras through deep integration of hardware and software.” ; According to Apple, in the iPhone 14 you can expect improvements in medium and low light performance: up to 2x on the ultra-wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and 2.5x on the main camera compared to the iPhone 13.

    Selfie camera

    iPhone 14 offers a noticeable jump in front camera performance. The front-facing selfie camera on iPhone 14 has an ƒ/1.9 aperture, which helps you take better photos and videos in low light. It also offers autofocus for the first time, so it can focus in low light and take group selfies from a greater distance.

    Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 offers a 12-megapixel front camera without autofocus and with ƒ/Aperture 2.2. This means that the iPhone 14 should be vastly superior to the iPhone 13 in terms of front camera performance.

    iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: what should you buy this holiday season?

    The differences between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are minor, in fact, this may be one of the smallest annual iPhone updates in recent times, with some improvements to the camera, as well as adding features such as crash detection and emergency SOS via satellite.< /p>
