Asahi, the Linux to Apple Silicon Mac porting project, has released a new progress report detailing expanded support for USB and peripherals.

Project to port Linux to Apple Silicon Mac. Asahi Linux's latest update includes new hardware support, new features, and fixes for “longstanding issues”. It also has a new advanced kernel branch with suspend and display controller support.

The command reminds users that their Linux installations need to be updated. In early beta versions of macOS Ventura, they discovered an issue that caused Linux to stop loading after an update.

A package update fixed the bug earlier in 2022. However, they still see users update to macOS Ventura recently, or even to the latest 12.x macOS releases, and end up with non-bootable Linux installations.

Changes in Asahi

Long blog post with many new updates. Most of the updates are in peripherals, USB-C, and headphones.

Until now, Asahi Linux only supported USB 2.0 on Thunderbolt ports. The team now believes USB 3 support should be reasonably robust, but users should expect some hiccups, especially when hot-plugging devices quickly. As per the title in the post titled “USB3 Chapter 2×7 Gen3.1415”. this may include USB 3.1 support.

However, users should be able to troubleshoot by disconnecting and reconnecting the device.

In the meantime, support for Mac speakers continues. The team needs to implement a security model so that users don't burn out their speakers, as happened during testing. The speakers remain disabled, but there is progress.

But thanks to the reverse engineering of the headphone codec used in the new Macs, Asahi now supports the headphone jack.

The new update also includes support for keyboard backlighting. However, the team is still working on display brightness support.

This is a nice update for Asahi Linux, and soon users will be able to install it and get some practical use out of it. Experienced Mac users can find installation instructions for Asahi Linux.
