According to a Weibo post shared by Twitter user DuanRui, Apple allegedly intended to release a new Apple Pencil codenamed Maker (or more likely Marker) in its September 2022 release, and even went as far as mass-producing over one million units of the accessory, only to have it launched at the eleventh hour for unspecified reasons.
In order to cut costs, the device allegedly lacked pressure. touch technology or a rechargeable battery, but instead used a built-in chip to power the stylus through the screen of an iPad or iPhone, similar to how the Samsung S-Pen works.
An unreleased App costs $49. Le Pencil would be significantly cheaper than the first and second generation Apple Pencil models priced at $99 and $129 respectively.
Unfortunately, the source of the Apple Pencil Rumors don't have a track record, so claims should be treated with a lot of skepticism. Also, this isn't the first time we've heard rumors that the Apple Pencil is being designed to work with the iPhone, but none of them have materialized.
The new Apple Pencil even supports the iPhone, but the project was discontinued closer to launch. It is said that there were over a million levels in stock at the time, and now they should all be thrown out. (2/2) source: https://t.co/EB3sCjM6Og — DuanRui (@duanrui1205), November 24, 2022
However, the batteryless Apple Pencil will pair well with the latest 10th generation iPad, which comes with a USB-C port and requires a clunky $9 Lightning dongle to work with Apple Pencil first generation. Again, it's not clear why Apple abandoned plans to release a mass-produced accessory.
If this were indeed the case, and Apple made that many devices, then past history suggests that some devices will eventually be leaked. Would you welcome Apple Pencil for iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
