Apple's updates to the iPad lineup in 2024 will include a new iPad Air model, says a prominent Apple analyst, and a new 12.9-inch variant is believed to be on the way.
Rumors have it that Apple will release new iPad models sometime in 2024, with the main focus being the iPad mini and iPad Pro. A report from TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo seems like the oft-overlooked iPad Air may be getting another variant.
In a Sunday post on Medium, Kuo writes that two iPad Air models are planned for mass production in the first quarter of 2024. The 10.9-inch model will be joined by a 12.9-inch version that won't have the mini-LED technology of its iPad Pro counterpart, but will still benefit from using the same specification Oxide backplane.
This isn't the first time a larger iPad Air has been rumored to be offered. In October, a report stated the same amount.
Kuo also says that two iPad Pro models with OLED displays will arrive late in the first or second quarter of 2024, replacing the mini-LED versions. The models will include a new form factor, an M3 processor and an OLED panel. a tandem design with LTPO backplanes will be used.
Mass production of OLED versions will be delayed until the first or second quarter, rather than the early first quarter of planning, which appears to be due to issues with OLED panels.
Kuo warns that if the price of the new 10.9-inch iPad Air doesn't change and if the 12.9-inch iPad Air is “definitely more expensive,” Apple may raise the price of the OLED iPad Pro. models to “maintain a price gap” between ranges.
As for “more affordable models,” Kuo believes mass production of the new iPad mini will be delayed to the second half of 2024, rather than the first quarter as previously expected. The 11th generation iPad will also be mass produced in the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, Kuo believes that production of the ninth generation iPad will “come to an end” before the end of 2024.
