“Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the latest Apple Arcade game to be nominated for Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards, but the competition is fierce.
Apple has always been in the shadow of The Game Awards, if only by proxy. The iPhone and App Store lead the mobile gaming industry in terms of revenue.
However, Apple Arcade is a relatively new development from the iPhone company. The Game Awards have been around since 2014, and Apple Arcade games have been nominated since the service debuted in 2019, but have yet to win.
Developer Sunblink Entertainment will release Hello Kitty Island Adventure in July 2023. This game is quite popular and remains in the top five Apple Arcade games on the App Store.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure competes with Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, Honkai: Star Rail, Monster Hunter Now and Terra Nil. It's a diverse lineup with several popular IPs, but “Hello Kitty” can only hold its own on brand recognition.
Apple has seen previous games such as “Sayonara Wild Hearts,” “Grindstone” and “What the Golf?” in 2019 and “Fantasia” in 2021 were nominated for the show's awards. Apple Arcade also debuted the world premiere trailer for Ultimate Rivals: The Rink during The Game Awards 2019.
Despite its best efforts, Apple Arcade hasn't received much attention from critics. There are over 300 games available on the service, none of which have won The Game Awards, and very few of which have been nominated at all.
The Game Awards 2023 will take place on December 7th. Vote for your favorites across all 31 categories on The Game Awards website to determine the winners — who are ultimately selected by jury vote.
